Welcome to the Diabetes and Thyroid Metabolic Clinic! As we start the month of May, it’s important to recognize that May is Osteoporosis Awareness Month. This is a time to focus on the importance of bone health and to raise awareness about osteoporosis, a condition that affects millions of people worldwide.
Osteoporosis is a condition where bones become weak and brittle, which can lead to fractures and other complications. It is often referred to as the “silent disease” because there are usually no symptoms until a fracture occurs. This is why it is important to have bone density tests to identify early signs of osteoporosis.
Hypothyroidism, a condition where the thyroid gland does not produce enough hormones, has also been linked to an increased risk of osteoporosis. This is because thyroid hormones play a critical role in bone metabolism. When thyroid hormone levels are low, bone formation slows down and bone resorption (the process of breaking down bone tissue) increases. This can lead to a loss of bone mass and density over time.

If you have hypothyroidism, it’s important to talk to your healthcare provider about your risk for osteoporosis and to have regular bone density tests. You can also take steps to improve your bone health by getting enough calcium and vitamin D through your diet or supplements, doing weight-bearing exercises, and avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption.
At our clinic, we are committed to helping our patients manage their diabetes and thyroid conditions, as well as any associated complications like osteoporosis. We encourage all of our patients to be proactive about their bone health and to talk to us about any concerns they may have. Together, we can work towards maintaining strong and healthy bones for a better quality of life.
